Life Under the Sun

Some folks have to touch a stove to learn it’s hot...some can learn by listening & understanding the wisdom of others. Solomon was the wisest man to ever live and Ecclesiastes describes his attempt to pursue happiness “under the sun,” that is, WITHOUT God, and his conclusions. If we take the time to really listen to the wisdom of Solomon, we can learn a great deal without needing to touch the stove ourselves.

“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” is nothing new, as the Declaration of Independence says...
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” 

While life, liberty, & pursuit of happiness are God given rights, Solomon speaks wisdom to us through his words in Ecclesiastes. He gives us a first hand account, as the wisest man to ever live, that life apart from God is completely void of purpose and full of great disappointment. 

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, what profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? (Ecc 1:2-3) The word Vanity, used 37x, means “futility” or “uselessness”. The phrase Under the sun is used 28x and means “apart from God.” or a “humanist” worldview. To sum up Solomon’s wise conclusion, life under the sun (WITHOUT God) is vanity (useless).

What we do with the time given us matters. To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven. What is your purpose, what is your goal? How will you pursue it today, this week, this semester, this year? 

YOU have to decide what to do with the time that is given to YOU.
