The Whole Duty of Man

NO SCHOOL today, whoo hoo, but do you know why?

Labor Day (First Monday in September) celebrates the contributions and achievements of American workers. It officially became a federal holiday in 1894 after terrible strikes in Chicago.

In the late 19th century, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the average American worker put in 12-hour days, seven days a week. That was just to put food on the table, nothing extra...talk about toil. Some families even had their children, as young as 5 or 6, toiling in mills, factories and mines. Makes studying for an algebra test seem like a piece of cake.

Enjoy the day off school, but consider making “Labor Day” more than just a day off school. More than just a day you eat two...three...or possibly six hotdogs, plus a cheeseburger...and a hamburger.

Use it as a day to step back and consider all you have done “under the sun”, and think about the purpose for why you do what you do. Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come (Ecc 12:1). Thank Him for the blessings you have and remind yourself of what's truly worth laboring for. God gives us purpose, let your light shine, and always follow Him.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.” ~ Ecclesiastes 12:13
