Why are we told to Obey Parents?

Growing up did your parents ever ask you to do something and you didn’t quite understand why? Does it matter? Of course not, as a child you are expected to obey your parents, why, because they know more than you and understand the larger picture. If you don’t obey there usually is (and should be) consequences to help you understand obedience is important. As we grow and gain our own understanding we can often look back and easily understand the why’s, even though they didn’t make sense at the time.

God instructs children to obey their parents, why? Well, there are several reasons, but I believe one is so that we learn obedience.

Ephesians 6:1-3
6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

As we grow into being adults we take on more and more responsibility, but the obedience we learn growing up is still required of us as adults. No longer are we asked to be obedient to our parents, but we are to be obedient to God. Obedient to God’s Will, to the roles He calls us to fill, to His Truth, and His mission for our lives.

Colossians 3:18-21
18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. 20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.

Why? Because He knows more and understands the bigger picture.

Many today want Faith without Obedience. Sorry. It just doesn’t work that way and it never has. Learn obedience while you’re young and it will serve you well later in life. It’s very simple...if we love & believes our parents we obey them. If we love & believe (faith in) God we obey Him.

Proverbs 17:24
Wisdom is in the presence of the one who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
